DYNAMIC BIOSCIENCE & HEALTH CARE LEADERS

Existing treatment archetypes are being transformed throughout Arizona's bioscience and healthcare industry. The state is home to one-of-a-kind partnerships among teaching hospitals, research institutions, commercial companies, investors and foundations that make it more efficient and effective to conduct research and commercialize new technology.

CANCER TREATMENT

Arizona is dedicated to advancing improvements in diagnosing and treating cancer. With integrated, high-quality care, Arizona’s health care leaders are drafting radical new concepts for cancer treatment and diagnosis. The Mayo Clinic has developed a breakthrough treatment for aggressive forms of breast cancer and pancreatic cancer, while Ventana Medical Systems, part of the Roche Group, collaborates with leading pharmaceutical companies to develop companion diagnostics to better match patients to therapies.

DIAGNOSTICS, PERSONALIZED MEDICINE

Diagnostics research and development is led by Arizona’s public universities in partnership with public and private institutions. These partnerships make the state a more efficient and effective location to conduct research and create entirely new types of products. The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a leader applying genomic analysis and bioinformatics to developing precision treatments and drugs for common and complex diseases.

MEDICAL DEVICES

Arizona’s specialized manufacturing supply chain serves the need for hyper-customized products. Becton Dickson’s headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in Tempe, where the global medical technology company develops its biopsy and peripheral vascular devices. Arizona medical device developers are also drivers for digital transformation. Biotech giant Celgene produces its Abraxane cancer treatment in Phoenix. From Medtronic’s electromedical devices to W. L. Gore’s implantable medical devices, diverse development and manufacturing companies support Arizona’s unparalleled medical device sector.

NEUROSCIENCES

Arizona institutions lead the way in research and treatment for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) and others. The Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital is home to cutting-edge imaging technology and clinical and research partnerships with world-class neurologists and neurosurgeons. Banner Sun Health Research Institute hosts the NIH-designated Arizona Alzheimer's Disease Center. These institutions and others are partners in the nonprofit organization Arizona Alzheimer's Consortium, a model of statewide collaboration in Alzheimer's disease research and one of the world's most productive Alzheimer's disease research programs.

PHARMACEUTICALS

Nationally-recognized leaders in cutting-edge pharmaceuticals drive drug development and testing in Arizona. Icagen’s Tucson Research Center works in computational chemistry and ultra-high throughput screening to discover next-generation therapies for Sanofi and other clients. Tucson-based Critical Path Institute is dedicated to improving FDA processes to accelerate the pace and reduce the costs of medical innovation.

HOSPITALS

Healthcare providers are a vital component of Arizona’s biomedical infrastructure. Hospitals and providers around Arizona also participate in cutting-edge research through clinical trials and laboratory research, enabling discoveries for patients worldwide. U.S. News & World Report examined data for over 5,000 hospitals nationwide to rank the “Best Hospitals in the U.S.” Three hospitals in Arizona were nationally ranked. Phoenix Children’s Hospital, for the fifth time, was named a “Best Children’s Hospital” in 10 of 10 ranked specialties by U.S. News & World Report, marking the fifth time it earned the prestigious ranking. Banner Health, recognized as a top health system in the country for the clinical quality consistently provided to patients, is headquartered in Phoenix. Mayo Clinic Arizona earned a position in the “Honor Roll,” ranking among the 20 best hospitals in the nation and the number one hospital in Arizona.
